Aquariums in the Maremma

There are two aquariums in the area which offer the kids, and adults too, the chance to discover and understand marine ecosystems of our seas.

Porto Santo Stefano Mediterranean Aquarium
Managed by the Marine Biology Learning Center of Monte Argentario, its goal is to reproduce, as faithfully possible, the ecosystems of the Costa d’Argento.
The Aquarium has 17 tanks of which 7 are panoramic, sizes varying from 2,000 to 20,000 liters. You can see hundreds of plant and animal species such as groupers, sea horses, octopuses, moray eels, lobsters dogfish, ocelots, anthias, black seabream, sea urchins, sea grass, sea fans and much, much more.
There is also a tropical tank to give the idea of what tropical seas are like. Rich in corals and colorful fish like little Nemo (clown fish).
There are also three permanent exhibitions in the Aquarium: the first relating to shells, with nearly 100 species, the second is dedicated to the history of underwater technology with a section dedicated to photography, and the third is dedicated to the cetaceans and international marine mammal sanctuary.
